Children's Books

I have always loved picture books. The older I became the more embarrassed  I was to spend hours and hours in the picture book section of libraries and bookstores. Eventually I realized I was there because secretly that's what I wanted to do:
Write and illustrate picture books.

Surprisingly, my first picture book wasn't about my sled dogs (although if you look closely you will see that Pompey snuck his way into the illustrations). Li'l Shadd: A Story of Ujima was a collaboration with the Saskatchewan African Canadian Heritage Museum. It celebrates African-Canadian pioneer doctor Alfred Schmitz Shadd and the importance of caring for each other.

Li'l Shadd: A story of Ujima can be ordered through
Your Nickel's Worth Publishing or your local bookstore.

When the Trees Crackle with Cold isn't about sled dogs either, but a lot closer to home and you'll find lots of dogs and even a dog team in here. It's a book about the traditional moon calendar of the Cree people. It's inspired by my friend and Cree language and culture teacher Bernice Johnson-Laxdal's childhood memories of growing up in Ile-a-la-Crosse.

When the Trees Crackle with Cold
will be released in November 2016.
It can be ordered through Your Nickel's Worth Publishing,
your local bookstore or from me directly.

Last, but not least: A book about what inspired my art making in the first place: Sled dogs, wilderness, old-time stories and northern Saskatchewan. This YA novel tells the story of 13-year old Jeremy who gets pressured into pulling a stray dog's tail. Knowing instantly what he has done is wrong he tries to do amends and befriends the dog. When Jeremy meets Yellow Dog's owner a friendship develops between the old man and the young boy that takes Jeremy beyond anything he ever imagined......

Yellow Dog can be ordered through Red Deer Press
or your local bookstore or amazon.
